Ewe Body Condition Score: How to Score and Record It
A ewe that lambs down thin is a problem you can usually see coming from months out — if you put your hands on her. Body condition score (BCS) tells you more about how a ewe will breed, carry, and raise lambs than any other number you'll take that day, and it takes seconds once you know the feel of it. The catch is that you cannot score it by eye, and a single number written down at the right handling is worth more than a whole flock you "know is in good nick" but never measured.
Body condition scoring ranks a mature sheep from 1 (emaciated) to 5 (obese) by the fat and muscle over the loin — the backbone between the hips and the start of the long ribs. You feel it in three moves:
- Hold the hand flat, fingers together, and feel across the top of the spine.
- Turn the hand flat again and feel down over the loin muscle.
- Reach down to the short (transverse) ribs and feel across and under them.
The fleece hides condition: unless a ewe is freshly shorn, a flock can look much the same from the rail while scoring all over the map by hand. Weight is no better — in one group of the same breed at a score of 3, weights ranged from roughly 40 kg to over 80 kg, so two ewes at the same weight can be thin and fat. The only honest measure is a hand on the loin.
Most of the work is learning the feel of a 3 — then every other ewe is simply thinner than it or fatter than it. The scale is continuous, so handlers score in half-points; a flock rarely lands on whole numbers.

A chute-side hand-check: a thin ewe's short-rib ends feel like your fingertips, a fit ewe's like your knuckles in a fist, and a fat ewe's like your wrist joint.
BCS only changes what you do if you take it when you can still act on it. Ontario's sheep guidance names the times that matter, and the logic holds everywhere ewes are run:
- At weaning. This is when next tupping's feeding program is set. A ewe that lambed down thin and is still thin at weaning has the whole summer to recover — and a ewe that's thin every weaning is a cull hiding in your flock.
- Pre-tupping, 8–12 weeks before mating. Score ewes (and rams) far enough out that there is time to put condition on before breeding. It takes roughly eight weeks on good pasture to gain one condition score, and a ewe needs more feed to gain a score than to lose one. Two weeks before tupping is too late to fix anything.
- Mid-pregnancy, around scanning. This is where flocks quietly lose condition on winter feed, and a ewe that drops half a score between tupping and scanning scans worse and lambs lighter. Catch it here and you can sort feeding before late pregnancy.
- At lambing. Confirms whether the late-gestation ration held the score — the finish line, not a place to start.
Rams follow the same 8–12 week rule: spermatogenesis takes about seven weeks, so a thin ram today means poor semen at breeding. Aim to turn them out at 3.5–4.0, since most lose condition over the mating period.
Targets move with the ewe's class, because a hill ewe is meant to draw down through the winter while a lowland ewe is meant to hold. The traditional targets:

One condition score is roughly 10–13% of a ewe's bodyweight — about 7–9 kg on a 70 kg ewe. That makes the targets a budget, not a wish: a lowland flock tupped at 3.5 and weaned at 2.5 has to put a full score back on over the summer, and at eight weeks a score, the clock starts at weaning, not September.
The flock average can read fine while a big slice of the ewes sit under it. In one Teagasc program the lowland flocks averaged a 3.3 at mating — a perfectly acceptable number — but 17% of ewes sat under 3.0, and on one farm nearly three in ten were below target. An average of 3.3 and a third of the flock thin are two completely different winters.
This is the reason a per-ewe score matters and a flock average does not. The ewes under 3.0 at mating are the ones that lamb down with no reserves, raise lighter lambs, and arrive at the next weaning thinner still — and that spiral starts at the tupping they went into thin. The action is to sort the thin ones: separate them for preferential feeding, pen thin single-bearing ewes with the twin-bearing group and thin twins with the triplets, and check that lameness or parasites aren't the real reason they're light. None of that is possible from an average.

That single Note column is where a score becomes a decision. A ewe at 2.5 at weaning goes on the flush list. A ewe that gains back to 3.0 by tupping comes off it. The ewe that is 2.5 at weaning every year — the one you keep feeding through a winter for a marginal lamb — that is the cull list, and you read it off the history instead of remembering it each spring. Recording the score against the ewe's ID each time turns four handlings into a trend; one score is a snapshot, and a snapshot taken from memory at weaning is a guess.
The production links behind that decision are why handlers bother: ewes thin at breeding have lower ovulation, conception, and lambing rates, and most fetal growth happens in the last four to six weeks, so a thin ewe at lambing raises smaller, weaker lambs with less milk. The score does not make those calls for you — it tells you which ewes to watch, feed harder, or stop carrying.
