Virtual Fencing Records: What the Collar Tells You (and What to Keep)
A redraw of a virtual fence is still a move. The cows walk onto fresh grass at the press of a button instead of through a gate you swung open — but the event is the same: a group changed paddocks on a date, for a reason, and six months from now somebody will want to know when. Virtual fencing records are about catching that event before it disappears into the collar's app and stays there.
The question is not really whether GPS collars hold cattle. Four years of University of Alberta rangeland research says they do, in Western Canadian conditions, better than most people expected. The harder question, and the one the hardware will not answer for you, is which of the signals a collar produces are worth keeping as part of an animal's record — and which are noise.
It does hold cattle, in case you were wondering
University of Alberta rangeland scientist Dr. Edward Bork's team started in 2022 with the basic questions: would the collars contain cattle through a Prairie grazing season, how fast would animals learn, and would the hardware survive. Reporting the results at RDAR's Round-Up near Cremona, Alberta, the containment rates exceeded 99 per cent — the share of time cattle stayed inside the virtual boundary — with relatively few escapes.
The learning curve was short. Yearling heifers with no exposure to electric fencing or collars learned the system in five to seven days. Brought back the next year as cows with calves at foot, they remembered the audio cues and were responding correctly to the boundary within 24 hours.
That is useful, but containment is a herd average. The interesting part for record-keeping is what the collar tells you about individual animals.
The signal worth keeping: which animals push the line
Here is the part only a working operation will feel in the gut. Every fence — wire or virtual — has the same handful of animals that walk through it. Bork's team found that after months of exposure, roughly 5 to 10 per cent of cattle kept interacting with the boundary to the point of taking the pulse. He called them, plainly, the same animals that push through or jump a conventional fence.
A collar turns that into data. The animal that challenges the line once is a moment; the animal that challenges it every week is a trait. Recorded against the tag over a season or two, it becomes a select-or-cull signal the same way calving difficulty or repeated treatment does — quiet, persistent, and invisible until you write it down. Most collar apps will show you the event in the moment. Almost none persist it as a searchable note on the animal's history that survives the season, the app, and the next piece of hardware.
That gap — between the signal the collar produces and a record you can still find two years later — is the whole opportunity.
Every redraw is a movement record
The other thing a virtual fence gives you that a wire fence cannot is effortless paddock moves. Redraw the boundary on your phone, and the herd shifts to fresh ground, to a riparian area you fenced off earlier in the season and have now reopened, to the west slope for the week. Bork's team used exactly this to build checkerboard exclusion patterns around sensitive riparian zones, closing and reopening sections through the summer.
Each of those redraws is a movement record: which group, which piece of ground, what date, and why. On paper or in a notebook you would write it down because the effort of the move forces you to. With a virtual fence the move costs nothing, which is exactly why it tends not to get recorded — and exactly why a winter feed plan, a grazing audit, or a riparian-management report later in the year has holes in it.
The fix is not more hardware. It is treating each meaningful redraw the way you would a trailer load: a short note, the date, the group, and the reason, kept with the animal's record.
What to record
A small, predictable list. Decide it once and it takes seconds per event.

The first two are the high-value ones. The move records build your grazing history; the per-animal boundary notes build your selection history. The collar-issue line matters most on yearlings.
On yearlings, check the fit
One detail from the U of A work that anyone who has run growing cattle will recognize: collar fit has to be watched on yearlings. They put on explosive weight on good summer grass, and a collar that fit at turnout can tighten as they bulk up. Bork's team found cows changed neck size only a little, but yearlings needed the fit checked and adjusted through the season. Slipped collars were easy to find by their onboard GPS, but the prevention — a chute-side fit check during a working day — is the cheaper habit.
A working day is the right moment for it anyway. The animal is in the headgate, the collar is right there, and the note belongs next to the weight and the tag.
