How lambing dates are calculated
Add 147 days to ram-in and ram-out to estimate the first and last lambing dates. To work backward, subtract 147 days from your planned lambing start and end. Either way, the calculator uses the same dates to plan weaning and ewe nutrition.
Example: Ram-in on October 1, 2026 and ram-out on November 10, 2026 give estimated lambing dates of February 25–April 6, 2027. These are example dates, not a recommended breeding schedule.

Common questions
How long are sheep pregnant?
Sheep are pregnant for an average of 147 days. Ontario’s lambing reference gives a range of 144–151 days. Breed and individual ewes vary, so actual lambing may fall outside the calculated dates.
How do I calculate lambing dates?
Add 147 days to the breeding date for an estimated lambing date. For a group, add 147 days to both ram-in and ram-out dates. Those are the first and last days the ram is with that group of ewes. They do not confirm when each ewe conceived.
When should I put the ram in for my planned lambing dates?
Subtract 147 days from your planned lambing start to estimate ram-in, and from your planned lambing end to estimate ram-out. Select “Lambing dates” in the calculator to work backward. These dates do not guarantee conception or lambing.
Why might lambing happen in waves?
Lambing may happen in waves about 17 days apart because ewes cycle about every 16–17 days. Ram-in does not start every ewe’s cycle, and some groups lamb more closely together than others. The illustration shows possible spacing only. It does not predict peak dates or how many ewes will lamb.
Why do pregnancy and lactation dates overlap?
Ewes in one group can be at different stages of pregnancy or milk production on the same day. That is why the date ranges overlap. The notes explain changing nutrition needs; they do not prescribe a ration or feed amounts.
What weaning age should I enter?
Enter the weaning age you plan to use for your lambs. The calculator starts at 60 days; actual timing depends on your operation and lamb readiness for solid feed. It accepts whole numbers of at least seven days. That limit keeps dry-off preparation from falling before midpoint lambing; it is not a recommended weaning age.
What do the dry-off preparation dates mean?
They mark the seven days before the plan’s midpoint weaning date, through that date. Use them to plan the change in ewe nutrition around weaning. They do not predict when milk production stops.
How can I check these estimates against my flock records?
Compare the estimates with actual dates for the same breeding group. Keep ram-in, ram-out, first-lamb, last-lamb, and weaning dates. Use that history when planning the next season.
