Exposure dates are not conception dates

The first day a ram has access identifies possible exposure, not observed service or confirmed conception. A group can include ewes served on different days, returning to estrus, or not conceiving in that window.

Breed, season, synchronization, ram effect, actual service and conception, and individual pregnancy variation can shift observed dates. The range is a planning aid, not a guaranteed boundary or a pregnancy diagnosis.

Learn from the same group: keep ram-in, ram-out, first-lamb, and last-lamb dates. Compare those observed dates with the named assumption before planning another season. One flock season does not establish a breed constant.

Common questions

When should ewes lamb after the ram goes in?

A common central planning value is 147 days after exposure, but ram access is not a known conception date. Use the first and last exposure dates as a group window and keep the selected gestation assumption beside the estimate.

Does the outer range guarantee every lambing date?

No. The outer result applies a selected source range to the exposure-window endpoints. Breed, season, actual service and conception, and individual pregnancy variation can move observed lambing outside that planning range.

What do the 17-day markers mean?

They are possible estrous-cycle wave markers spaced 17 days from ram-in, with a central lambing date added to each marker. They do not say that a ewe conceived on that date or predict a conception group.

How can I improve next year’s estimate?

Record ram-in, ram-out, first lamb, and last lamb dates for the same breeding group. Compare the observed interval with the assumption shown here before choosing a source profile for the next season.
